Agile Citrix Personal Computing at Yorkshire Housing
October 1, 2017

Delivering Windows 10 Desktop across multiple devices using Citrix XenApp / Xen Desktop and Citrix Netscaler.

Project Goal.

  • Deliver Windows 10 look and feel
  • Massively reduce peak login time to sub 15 seconds
  • Support people working everywhere across multiple devices
  • Transform DR capability to reduce RTO to < 1 hour in the event of major disaster

Issues Faced.

User logins were averaging over 3 minutes and more at peak times.

The DR solution involved having to update DNS records to point to the disaster recovery centre site leading to recovery times in excess of 4 hours.

Desktops were regularly freezing and remote access was slow and unreliable.

Solution.

  • Upgrade of Citrix to 7.12 and deploying Windows Server 2016 to give a Windows 10 look and feel.
  • Citrix Workspace Environment Manager (WEM) was deployed and Group Policy Objects were converted to WEM policies to drastically improve login performance and manageability.
  • Citrix Netscaler VPX was used for remote access.
  • A Netscaler was also deployed at the DR Centre running Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) and Authoritative Domain Name Server (ADNS) to automatically fail external access to the DR site.

Results.

  • Login times reduced to sub 15 seconds (20 at peak login)
  • Stable service with zero outages within the first 3 months
  • WEM delivered the ability to fine tune the user experience, more easily and securely
  • Disaster Recovery Time Objective of sub 1 hour and simple to administer.
